the trees still remember
the trees speak to me
in ways you can’t understand
because they don’t speak
in words, they speak
in meaning long forgotten
by those with ears
the trees speak to me
and tell me their secrets
of how to live well
when we live slowly
of how patience
can turn us away from fear
of places deep within
that remain unseen for those of us
who have forgotten we have roots, too
the trees speak to me
of times gone by when electricity
didn’t charge the air so
of times before, when the stars
told their stories
in our night skies with ease
of times when totem was honored
by community and ceremony
the trees are still speaking
to those who have the ear
the ear we lost
to progress and competition
when we sacrificed
community and balance
for convenience
the trees remember
they send stories through their branches
like we do through our
networks on the ethers
they keep the myths of the earth
the songs of the maenads
the laughter of the nymphs
the trees remember
when Pan’s magic still ruled
when Dionysus’ frenzied orgy
carried screams into the night
and dawned with catharsis
when the goddess was one
and hierarchies were matriarchal
in tune with the rhythms
of earth and of sea
of the cycles of the moon
the trees still remember
and speak histories
into the winds
